A Bit of the Past

Over the years, the Department of Emergency Management has collected a number of photographs of St. Augustine during times of unfriendly weather. These old photos are always of interest to those who have had the opportunity to see them. It is for this reason we have added them to our website. We do not have the exact dates many of these photos were taken, but the general consensus is circa 1940's.

Below are thumbnail versions of these photos. For those who may wish to print a copy and enjoy a bit of St. Augustine history, click on the photo for the printable version.

Storm Photos

The first two photos below are aerial views of the Bridge of Lions and Cathedral Place. Though very similar, there are some differences. The photo on the left has children playing in the water.

The first photo is a young couple heading across the Birdge of Lions. The second photo is of the Hotel Monson on the Bayfront.

The next photos are of the Hotel Bennett on the Bayfront. If you look closely at the second photo, you will see two men standing at the window.

The following four photos are of the Intercoastal Waterway (Matanzas River) along the Bayfront. Here you can see some of the effects the wind and water have along the Bayfront. Note, these photos were not taken during the height of the storm.

The last photo is of a car in a rather bad location.
